Serbia U15 must turn a strong first half into a complete tournament performance

Serbia U15 must turn a strong first half into a complete tournament performance

Serbia's youth side led Russia after Rade Vulic struck a long free kick into the upper corner, but the match finished with a 3-1 defeat for the hosts. Russia changed the contest after halftime through substitute Khetag Bakaev, who scored all three of his team's goals. The opening result leaves Serbia with a clear development task before facing the other teams in the event: preserve the confidence and compact play shown in the first half while learning how to respond when an opponent changes personnel and increases its pressure.

Vulic gave Serbia a deserved reference point

The opening goal came from a set piece at distance. Vulic's strike found the upper corner and rewarded Serbia for a first half in which the team prevented Russia from controlling the match. A youth tournament should not be judged only by a final score. The goal showed technical confidence, while the halftime lead showed that Serbia's structure could hold against an opponent trying to move the ball forward. Those are useful foundations for the rest of the event.

A lead also creates a new test. Young players must decide when to keep attacking, when to slow the game and how to defend without dropping too close to their goalkeeper. Serbia reached the interval in front, but the second half brought a different opponent. Russia used its substitutes effectively, and Bakaev gave its attacks a direct finishing point. Recognising that change early was the main challenge Serbia did not solve.

One substitute changed the questions

Bakaev's first goal came after he redirected a teammate's effort. His second was finished from inside the penalty area, and the third followed when he moved away from his marker and placed the ball into the far corner. The actions were not identical, even though the same player completed them. Serbia therefore had to solve several problems: defend the second phase of a shot, protect the central area and keep contact with a forward moving across the line.

The lesson is collective rather than a demand to blame one defender. When pressure rises, the nearest player must engage the ball, the next player must cover the dangerous space and the rest of the line must move together. A small delay between those jobs can give a sharp substitute enough time to finish. Development football exists partly to expose such details in a competitive setting, then give coaches and players another match in which to apply the correction.

The response should begin with the ball

Defending better does not mean Serbia should abandon the qualities that produced the lead. Keeping the ball after regaining it would reduce repeated waves of pressure and allow the team to move away from its own goal. The first pass does not always need to create a chance. It can help the midfield recover its shape and make the opponent turn. That calm choice becomes especially important after conceding, when a young side may be tempted to force an immediate answer.

Serbia also needs to keep offering a threat from set pieces and transitions. Vulic's goal means future opponents will respect shooting range, which can create another option from a free kick. However, a tournament performance cannot depend on repeating one exceptional strike. The next step is to create attacks through combinations, wide support and runs beyond the ball, giving the team more than one route to a goal.

A development event gives an immediate second chance

The field also includes Kazakhstan and Turkey, so Serbia will meet opponents with different habits before the event ends. That variety is the point. Coaches can compare how players react to physical pressure, direct attacks and changes of tempo. Selection at this age is not a final verdict on a career. It is an opportunity to learn how individual skills work inside a team when the match no longer follows the original plan.

The defeat should therefore be recorded honestly without becoming the only description of Serbia's opening display. The side earned a lead and protected it through the first half. It then conceded three times to one substitute and could not regain control. Both parts matter. A strong response would keep the courage of the opening period, improve communication after the interval and show that the players can use one difficult half as information rather than carry it as fear.
