Vršac hosts the Serbian Aquathlon Championship at the city lake on 16 August. The programme includes youth races, the main individual race and relays. Serbian athletes compete in swimming and running without a cycling section.

The main race combines one kilometre of swimming with 5.2 kilometres of running. Younger age categories compete across shorter race distances. The schedule separates their starts so the course and transition area remain clear.

The youngest athletes begin the programme

Younger pioneers and pioneers open the racing with fifty metres of swimming and a five-hundred-metre run. The short format introduces both disciplines without an excessive endurance load. Younger cadets race one hundred metres in the water before a run of about one kilometre. Cadets complete two hundred metres of swimming and a longer running segment.

Separate starts improve safety because athletes of similar age and speed share the course. Officials can also reset the transition area between groups.

Category Swim Run
Younger pioneers and pioneers 50 m 500 m
Younger cadets 100 m about 1 km
Cadets 200 m about 1.8 km
Main race categories 1 km 5.2 km

The main race uses two swimming laps

Junior, under-23, senior and age-group athletes enter the main event. They swim two laps of five hundred metres inside Vršac Lake. The course then directs them through shallow water toward transition. Athletes remove swimming equipment and begin the run. A clean transition saves time without requiring reckless movement. Every item needs a fixed place before the start.

The running course uses six laps on flat asphalt. Repeated laps help spectators follow the race. They also require athletes to count accurately while maintaining pace.

Aquathlon rewards balanced preparation

A strong swimmer can create space before transition, but the race is not finished at the water exit.

A fast runner can recover positions over 5.2 kilometres. The best result normally comes from balance. The change from horizontal swimming to upright running affects the legs and breathing. Athletes practise that change during combined sessions. The first running lap often feels different from a normal track start.

Pacing in the water is therefore important. An athlete who spends all available energy early may lose more time during the run. Controlled effort can produce a faster total result.

The event includes relays and several age groups

Relay teams can be female, male or mixed. One athlete completes the swimming part and the other runs, depending on the event rules. The format allows specialists to combine their strengths. Adult age groups extend participation beyond elite senior athletes. They use the main course but compete within their own categories. This structure keeps the national event open to a broad field.

All competitors follow the same safety and protest rules. Officials manage check-in, course access and timing. Clear procedures are important when many categories race during one day.

The championship gives Serbian athletes a home title race

Vršac Lake provides a familiar venue for domestic aquathlon. The flat running course removes steep climbs, but repeated turns and summer conditions still affect rhythm. The event links youth development with senior competition. Younger athletes can watch the main race after completing their own starts. Clubs can compare progress across several age groups.

The championship is built around real performances, not a promotional display. The swim, transition and run form one continuous effort. The final times decide the national titles across the listed categories.

Course safety depends on clear transitions

Athletes enter and leave the lake through marked areas. Officials keep spectators away from the route.

The shallow exit needs enough space for competitors whose balance changes after swimming. The transition zone contains only required equipment. Loose bags or shoes can block another athlete. Number placement and entry direction are explained before the start.

On the running course, repeated laps create overtaking situations. Faster athletes pass without forcing others off the route. Officials count laps and direct each category toward the correct finish. Summer heat increases the value of the refreshment point. Competitors decide whether a drink saves more time than it costs. Safety remains more important than a few seconds in any age category.

Timing records each part of the race in one result

Electronic timing begins when the race starts and ends at the finish line. A timing point near transition can also show how the order changed between swimming and running. Officials use the registered result for the final classification. Athletes wear the assigned number or timing device according to the event instructions. The device has to remain secure through the water and the run. A missing record requires an official check before results are confirmed. Age groups use the distance announced for their category. Younger athletes do not complete the same course as the senior field. Separate starts reduce congestion and keep the programme easier to control.

Relay teams divide the work between their registered members. The exchange takes place in the marked area. A team that misses the correct procedure can lose time or receive a penalty. The published results will list athletes by category and finishing time. That document gives the Serbian championship a clear sporting record after the last competitor crosses the line.
