Serbian swimmer Andrej Barna enters the men's 50-metre freestyle programme at the European Championships in Paris. The heats and semifinal programme lead into the final session on 16 August. Barna arrives as one of Europe's established sprint specialists.

He recorded 21.57 seconds in Canet and 21.76 in Barcelona earlier this season. Those performances place him among the swimmers capable of reaching the final stages. The fifty-metre race still leaves almost no room for a slow start or a poor finish.

The entire race fits inside one length

The 50-metre freestyle begins and ends without a turn. The start, underwater phase and first strokes carry unusual weight. A small delay can be difficult to recover before the wall. Swimmers need power without losing alignment. Excess movement creates drag and wastes the speed gained from the block. The first breath is also planned according to the athlete's normal pattern.

The finish requires a full stroke into the wall. Gliding too early can lose hundredths of a second. Taking one extra short stroke can create the same problem.

Barna has produced strong sprint times this season

Barna won the Canet race in 21.57 seconds. He also finished near the front at other Mare Nostrum meetings. The repeated results show stable speed across several weeks. Barcelona produced another performance below twenty-two seconds. That level is necessary in a deep European field. Advancement can depend on a very small difference between neighbouring lanes.

Previous medals give Barna experience with championship pressure. They do not remove the need for a clean heat.

Paris uses a direct final-session test

The men's 50-metre freestyle final is part of the closing session on 16 August. Other swimming finals share the evening programme. Recovery areas and warmup lanes remain busy throughout the session. Recovery begins quickly for athletes who progress from the earlier rounds. Food, fluids and light movement are controlled between swims. A sprinter cannot replace full race energy several times without careful preparation.

Coaches compare the start, stroke rate and finish after each round. Changes remain small because there is little time to rebuild technique during a championship.

Serbia has recent European freestyle success

Barna was part of Serbia's European title in the men's 4x100-metre freestyle relay in 2024. He also earned an individual European medal in the 100-metre freestyle. Those results established him at continental level. The 50-metre event demands a different balance from the longer sprint. There is less time for pace changes and no turn. Pure acceleration and clean technique matter from the first movement.

Serbia's relay success also reflects depth around Barna. The individual race places the entire result on one lane. His preparation uses the experience of both formats.

The clock provides the clearest measure

Sprint swimming can look level until the timing board appears. Lane position and camera angle can mislead the eye. The electronic touchpads decide the order. Barna's season shows that he can race at the required speed.

Paris asks him to repeat that level through the championship rounds. A controlled start and direct finish are more useful than any prediction.

The final weekend gives Serbian swimming a clear individual event to follow. Barna enters with current form and established European experience. His result is measured in one length and in differences that may be smaller than a normal reaction.

Reaction and start speed are measured separately

The official timing system records the race from the start signal to the touch. Coaches can also study reaction time and the first fifteen metres. Those parts explain where speed was gained or lost. A fast reaction is useful only when the start remains legal. Moving before the signal leads to disqualification. Sprinters train to respond quickly without guessing.

The underwater phase also demands a careful balance. Staying below the surface preserves speed, but the rules limit the distance. Barna rehearses the change to full strokes at the correct moment. That timing becomes part of the recorded race performance. The final time combines every part into one number. Video helps explain it after the race. During the event, the athlete relies on movements already learned through thousands of starts.
