Serbia's women's volleyball team is completing its final preparation for the European Championship. The team begins Group B against Austria in Brno on 21 August. Five group matches are scheduled across seven days.
Serbia also face the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Greece and Ukraine. The compact schedule gives the staff limited recovery time between several matches. Preparation now focuses on stable team work and player health.
Austria provide the first group test
Serbia play Austria at 14:00 on Friday. An opening match can carry extra tension because the team has no earlier tournament result to use. A calm first set can establish the normal service and reception rhythm. Serbia enter the event as the current European runner-up. That status brings expectation, but it does not award any points in Brno. The team still begins from the same score as Austria.
Serve pressure can reduce the opponent's attacking options. Serbia also need stable first contact to keep the setter's full range available. Poor reception would make the attack easier to read. The first match is followed by a rest day. That gives the staff time to review the opening performance. Treatment and light training can prepare the players for the home team.
The Czech Republic and Bulgaria follow quickly
Serbia meet the Czech Republic on 23 August at 19:00. The host team can expect strong support in Brno. Serbia need clear court communication throughout long rallies. Bulgaria are the next opponent one day later. Consecutive match days change the normal recovery plan. Players may have less full training and more video work between fixtures.

Serbia's players celebrate together during an international volleyball match.
Rotation depth becomes important during a compressed group stage. Substitutes can change serve, block height or back-row defence. They also help protect players carrying a heavy load. The result against one opponent cannot be allowed to decide the next match. Each team presents different servers and attacking routes. Serbia need a separate plan for every fixture.
Greece and Ukraine close the group programme
Serbia face Greece on 26 August and Ukraine on 27 August. The final two group matches are played on consecutive days. By then, the standings may influence rotation choices. The team still needs to protect its own level. Looking too far ahead can weaken the current match. Clear passing and disciplined blocking remain useful in every situation.
Group position determines the route into the knockout phase. Every set can affect the table when teams finish level on wins. Serbia therefore cannot treat a lost set as unimportant. The final group match begins at 16:00. Recovery starts immediately after the Greece game. Staff can adjust the warm-up and meal schedule for the earlier start.
| Date | Opponent | Start time in Brno |
|---|---|---|
| 21 August | Austria | 14:00 |
| 23 August | Czech Republic | 19:00 |
| 24 August | Bulgaria | 19:00 |
| 26 August | Greece | 19:00 |
| 27 August | Ukraine | 16:00 |
Simple volleyball actions carry the campaign
Serbia have international experience across the squad and coaching staff. The European Championship still rewards simple actions completed under pressure. A good serve, accurate pass and organised block remain the base. Long points require patience and several successful defensive contacts. A team may need multiple touches before receiving a clean attacking chance.
Rushing the first difficult ball can waste that work.
The Brno programme provides five different opponents. It also tests recovery because four matches are played across the final five days. The staff need useful information from every player. Serbia open against Austria on 21 August. The route then continues through the host nation, Bulgaria, Greece and Ukraine. Those confirmed matches define the immediate task.
The group table uses wins, points and set records
Teams first need match wins to improve their group position. The competition rules then use points and set information when records are equal. A five-set win does not produce the same table return as a three-set win. Every set affects the group standings. Serbia improves its position with a straight-set win. A difficult five-set match may still produce one ranking point.
The staff can follow the table without changing the next rally. Players receive simpler instructions on court. They serve to a chosen zone, protect the block and prepare the next attack.
Brno is only the first stage of the championship
The group does not award the European title. It determines qualification and the next opponent. Serbia need enough results to continue before any medal discussion becomes relevant. Knockout matches remove the margin for a later correction. The group stage therefore offers valuable time to improve timing while still collecting wins.
The immediate focus remains on Austria and the opening group match. A stable performance can reduce pressure before the denser part of the programme begins.
