Je-gon Kim chooses Red Star for his first step in Europe

Red Star have signed South Korean midfielder Je-gon Kim on a five-year contract. The 18-year-old will wear number 19 and begin his European career in Belgrade after progressing through the Jeonbuk system.

Kim said Red Star made the strongest impression during the talks. He felt the club genuinely wanted him and believed its playing style would help him adapt to senior European football.

Red Star's first-team plan influenced Kim's decision

Kim attracted attention because of his technical ability and his progress at a young age. Interest from larger European markets did not automatically provide the best next step. Red Star could offer a direct place in the senior environment and a clear plan for development. The midfielder can train with experienced players while learning the speed and physical demands of European matches.

Regular work is important at eighteen. A famous academy can provide excellent coaching, but a player also needs a realistic route toward competitive minutes. Kim placed that route at the centre of his choice.

Jeonbuk prepared him for senior football

Kim developed in the youth ranks of Jeonbuk, one of South Korea's leading clubs. At the beginning of 2026, he received a semi-professional agreement and joined the second team. He made eleven appearances in the third level of South Korean football and scored three goals. Those games gave him experience against older opponents and moved his development beyond youth competitions.

Red Star will now assess which part of that experience transfers immediately. Training speed, defensive responsibility and contact around midfield may require another period of adjustment.

The new midfielder can cover more than one role

Kim is most comfortable as an attacking midfielder, where he can receive the ball between the opponent's lines. He can also play on a wing and enter the centre from a wider starting position. His strongest role at Red Star will depend on the balance around him. A central position offers more touches but also demands faster decisions under pressure. A wide role may provide more space for direct movement.
