Luka Gladovic will miss the European Under-20 Water Polo Championship after breaking his leg. The Serbian player is expected to wear a cast for about four weeks. The tournament begins in Varna on August 10.

Gladovic recently left Novi Beograd and will continue his career at UCLA. The injury removes him from Serbia's group matches against Montenegro, Spain and Germany. His recovery now begins away from the pool.

The injury arrived before the final tournament camp

Serbia was preparing its under-20 group for the championship in Bulgaria. Gladovic suffered the injury before the team completed that work. Medical assessment confirmed a fracture and the need for a cast.

Four weeks without normal water training covers the entire tournament period. A broken leg also requires gradual work after the cast is removed. The player cannot return immediately to full contact.

Gladovic had already missed recent senior national-team activity in Budapest. This new injury creates another interruption during his summer. The current absence is based on a confirmed medical problem.

Serbia therefore enters Varna without one of its selected young players. The staff now relies on the remaining group. Gladovic begins rehabilitation while his teammates continue the final preparations.

Serbia will face Montenegro, Spain and Germany during the opening stage. All three opponents have established youth water polo programmes. The group offers no simple route into the later rounds.

Montenegro brings close regional familiarity and strong physical play. Spain has produced consistent results across several age groups. Germany adds another different match style to the schedule.

Gladovic's absence reduces Serbia's available rotation for those games. Tournament play often places several matches inside a short period. Each missing player affects both minutes and recovery.

Novi Beograd players contest the ball during a club match.

The first match begins only days after the final training block. Serbia has limited time to adjust the selected roles. The change arrives before the team enters its opening group game.

Gladovic was preparing for a move to UCLA

Gladovic recently completed his period with Novi Beograd. His next competitive step is college water polo at UCLA. The move places him inside a strong American university programme.

The injury delays his normal physical preparation for that change. It does not alter the confirmed move itself. Recovery will determine his return to regular pool work.

College water polo uses a demanding calendar beside academic commitments. Arriving healthy supports adaptation to both parts. Gladovic first completes the basic medical stages in Serbia.

His experience at Novi Beograd still provides a strong base. He trained around senior players and high-level competition. The current problem interrupts that path but does not erase it.

The cast protects the fracture while the bone begins healing. During this period, Gladovic cannot perform normal leg work in the water. Medical checks will guide the timing of each next step.

Fitness work may continue only inside the limits set by specialists. Water polo depends heavily on leg strength and movement. A rushed return would create unnecessary risk.

After the cast, rehabilitation usually restores movement before full power. Pool sessions then return in controlled stages. Contact and match play come later than basic swimming.

The announced four-week period describes the expected time in the cast. It is not a fixed competitive return date. Gladovic's progress will depend on healing and later physical tests.

Serbia loses a player, while the event continues

The under-20 championship remains an important step for Serbia's generation. Gladovic will not take part because of the fracture. The remaining players now carry the tournament responsibility.

His absence also removes a chance to gain international matches before UCLA. That experience cannot be replaced during the same week. The priority is a complete recovery.

Serbia begins against strong opponents and needs depth across every position. The final squad will reflect the available healthy players. No replacement reproduces Gladovic's exact role immediately.

Gladovic follows the championship from outside the pool while rehabilitation begins. The move to UCLA remains his next confirmed career step. His return will come only after medical clearance.

The timing makes the injury especially difficult, because two separate plans overlap. Serbia loses him for Varna, while UCLA waits for a healthy new player. Both situations depend on the same careful recovery process.

Gladovic may still attend tactical meetings if his condition permits. He cannot replace match minutes from outside the water. The selected squad completes every group game without his normal contribution.

The injury announcement provides a clear reason for his absence. It avoids speculation about selection or club plans. His immediate schedule now contains treatment, medical checks and a gradual return to movement.
