Serbia's men's volleyball team have selected 14 players for the European Championship in Tampere. Head coach George Cretu chose two setters, two opposites, two liberos, four middle blockers and four outside hitters. Serbia begin Group C against Estonia before meeting Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium. The schedule places five matches inside seven days, so preparation must combine a clear opening plan with careful use of recovery and the available squad.
The squad is balanced across five roles
Two players cover each of the setter, opposite and libero positions, while four choices are available in the middle and on the outside. That distribution gives the staff a replacement in every specialist role and more tactical combinations at the net. Selection is only the first step. Each player needs to know whether he begins, supports a specific rotation or is prepared to change the rhythm from the bench.
The opening match against Estonia provides the first test
The opening match arrives after travel and several days of preparation in Finland. Serbia should use that time to establish service targets, reception responsibilities and the first substitution options. Starting well does not mean forcing an immediate advantage. A stable opening rotation and clear communication will tell the team more than one aggressive sequence that cannot be repeated.
| Position | Selected players |
|---|---|
| Setters | Nikola Jovovic, Aleksa Batak |
| Opposites | Drazen Luburic, Veljko Masulovic |
| Liberos | Vukasin Ristic, Stefan Negic |
| Middle blockers | Nedeljkovic, N. Masulovic, Stefanovic, Kokeza |
| Outside hitters | Ivovic, Kujundzic, Peric, Marinovic |
The host match will carry a different atmosphere
Finland follow Estonia in the group schedule and will receive direct support in Tampere. Serbia must prepare for noise between points and for an opponent comfortable with the hall. Communication can be shortened to familiar calls so instructions remain clear. The team should also experience the lighting and space during training, because judging a high ball can feel different in a new arena even when the court dimensions are unchanged.
Serbia will need accurate reception against the Netherlands
The third match follows only one day after the meeting with Finland. Serbia will need physical recovery and a precise tactical review rather than a long training session. Against a strong net presence, the first contact must give Jovovic or Batak more than one attacking option. If the setter is forced into the same high ball repeatedly, the opposing block can organize early and remove Serbia's variety.

Denmark arrive after the only rest day
A free day before the fourth match provides time to recover but can also interrupt competitive rhythm. The staff should keep one short technical session and a clear meeting focused only on Denmark. Looking ahead to Belgium would dilute preparation. The group format rewards every set, so Serbia must approach the match with the same order expected against the better-known opponents.
Belgium close a demanding sequence
The final group match comes one day after Denmark. By then, the table may define what Serbia need, but calculations should not replace the first tactical task. A required set or victory is achieved through ordinary points and stable rotations. The coaching staff can use information from four earlier matches to choose the healthiest combination without asking tired players to carry every responsibility.
Recovery is part of the tournament plan
Five matches in seven days limit the value of heavy work between games. Sleep, nutrition, treatment and short video review become central parts of performance. Players outside the starting group must remain prepared because one physical issue can change a role immediately. The squad's balance allows rotation only if the replacements have received enough information and touches before they are needed.
The first objective is a place in the next round
The group contains different styles and no match should be treated as automatic. Serbia need results, but also a level that can survive the short turnaround between fixtures. A successful first week will show clear service choices, connected block and defense, and calm responses after lost sets. Those habits give the team a stronger base than any prediction made before the first ball.
