Luka Jovic scored twice as AEK defeated Iraklis 4-0 in the opening round of the Greek Super League. The Serbian striker scored from a shot in the first half and headed in another goal soon after the break.
Jovic scored his first goal in the 19th minute
AEK began the match with strong pressure and quickly moved the ball into the penalty area. Jovic scored in the 19th minute to make the score 2-0. He received a pass near the penalty area and sent a powerful shot under the crossbar. Jovic moved away from his defender before the pass arrived and then shot without an extra touch. The goalkeeper had little time to react.
A two-goal lead allowed AEK to control the pace. The home side did not need to rush every attack. AEK kept the ball and made Iraklis work harder to regain possession.
Jovic headed in his second goal
The Serbian forward scored again in the 49th minute. This time he headed the ball into the goal. AEK increased its lead and made a comeback very difficult for Iraklis. A forward must follow the flight of a cross, move away from the defender and meet the ball at the right moment. Jovic completed all three actions, and the goalkeeper could not stop his header.
AEK later scored once more and completed a 4-0 victory. The result gave the defending champion its first three points of the new league season.
Jovic gives AEK several ways to attack
Jovic scored once from a low pass and once from a cross. AEK can therefore create chances through passes on the ground or crosses into the penalty area. His teammates must still support him. Defenders can stop a striker more easily when every pass comes from the same direction.
Attacks from both sides and runs from midfield can create space for Jovic.

His work without the ball is also important. By keeping both central defenders busy, he can create space for a teammate. AEK used this team movement well against Iraklis and did not repeat only one type of attack.
AEK prepare for the second match against Levski
The league match came before an important Champions League qualifier. AEK will face Levski in the second leg after the first meeting in Sofia ended 0-0. The team therefore enters the game with confidence but without an aggregate advantage. Jovic's two goals are encouraging, although the European match will create a different test. Levski can defend more cautiously because one goal may shape the whole tie. AEK must remain patient and protect against counterattacks.
The 4-0 result was a strong start to the league season. Jovic made the largest individual contribution with two goals. One goal came from a shot and the other came from a header, giving AEK several attacking options for the next match.
Jovic started the league season with two goals
Two goals in the first league round give the striker confidence, but the quality of his movement is the more useful sign for AEK. Jovic reached the penalty area at the correct moment and remained available when the attack changed direction. AEK can now build on a result that included control and effective finishing. The next opponents may leave less space, so the forwards will need the same patience. Jovic does not have to touch the ball in every phase if his position creates a clear option near goal.
For Serbia, regular club minutes are also important. A striker who plays complete matches can arrive at an international break with better rhythm. The national team coaches will watch his health, movement and ability to repeat these actions against stronger defensive pressure. The next challenge will show whether AEK can create the same support when an opponent defends closer to its own goal. Jovic may have less room to turn, so simple passes and early crosses will matter. His first league match gave the team two clear examples of how to find him near goal.
