Bosnia's first 2026 World Cup squad began a run to the knockout stage

Bosnia and Herzegovina announced its squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on May 11. Head coach Sergej Barbarez and national-team director Emir Spahić presented the list at the federation headquarters in Sarajevo. The tournament later showed how that group responded in four competitive matches.

The official squad list changed the focus from qualification to preparation. Bosnia had reached the World Cup through the European play-offs, beating Wales and Italy in March. The players then had a short period to prepare for travel, two friendlies and the group stage in North America.

Barbarez's staff gathered the team in Ilidža later in May. The group played North Macedonia in Sarajevo and Panama in St. Louis before the World Cup. Those matches were used to manage fitness, test combinations and prepare for different opponents. They were not part of the tournament standings.

The final squad was affected by normal availability questions. Haris Tabaković remained with the team, while Arjan Malić received a later call-up. The federation also reported individual fitness issues during the preparation period. These updates showed that the list announced on May 11 was the start of the final process, not the end of team management.

Bosnia collected four points in Group B

Bosnia opened the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against host Canada in Toronto. Switzerland won the second match 4-1 in Los Angeles. That defeat left Bosnia under pressure before the final group game, but the team recovered and beat Qatar 3-1 in Seattle.

Four points placed Bosnia third in the group with a goal difference of minus one. The expanded tournament format allowed the team to advance to the round of 32. That achievement gave the May squad announcement a clear competitive outcome: the selected group moved beyond the first stage.

The United States ended the campaign

Bosnia met the United States in the round of 32 in the San Francisco Bay Area. The American team won 2-0 after leading 1-0 at half-time. The defeat ended Bosnia's second World Cup appearance and prevented a place in the final sixteen.

The result should be kept separate from the group record. Bosnia did not leave the tournament after the Switzerland loss, and the Qatar victory was not a friendly. It was the result that completed a four-point group campaign and secured progression. The United States match was the first knockout fixture and the final game.

The sequence also gives a fairer view of the squad. It experienced a draw, a heavy defeat, a necessary win and a knockout loss. Presenting those results in order avoids the confusion created when different scores are mixed without their stage or opponent.
