The Next Chapter: Serbia Plots EuroBasket 2027 Glory With Jokic at the Helm

For a country that has produced one of the greatest basketball players in the history of the sport, Serbia's national programme has always carried expectations that border on the extraordinary. With Nikola Jokic's NBA future now secure following his contract extension with the Denver Nuggets, the question turning heads in Belgrade and beyond is not whether the three-time MVP will be available — but who will stand alongside him when the EuroBasket 2027 qualifying campaign gets underway this autumn.

The landscape has shifted considerably. Bogdan Bogdanovic, arguably Serbia's most important perimeter creator over the past decade, enters the summer as a free agent. Vasilije Micic is reportedly heading to Hapoel Tel Aviv after his NBA stint. A new generation — headlined by Aleksej Pokusevski and the increasingly prominent Nikola Topic at Oklahoma City Thunder — is pushing at the door. Serbia's coaching staff faces a reconfiguration project of genuine complexity, and the window to get it right before EuroBasket 2027 is narrower than it might appear.

Jokic: The Immovable Foundation

Everything in Serbian basketball begins and ends with Nikola Jokic, and that will remain the case through the next major cycle. His NBA extension with Denver confirmed what many had assumed — he is not going anywhere, either from the Nuggets or from the national setup that he has represented with consistent pride. Jokic has consistently spoken warmly about pulling on the eagle jersey, and with EuroBasket 2027 representing one of the last realistic opportunities for his generation to claim continental gold, his motivation is unlikely to wane.

What makes Jokic uniquely valuable in the national-team context is not merely his individual brilliance — it is the way he restructures the entire offensive system around him. Serbia can build from the five-man position outward, placing shooters and cutters in spaces that Jokic manufactures from the elbow and the post. The challenge for head coach Svetislav Pesic and his staff is to ensure that the players surrounding Jokic are calibrated to maximise those opportunities, particularly now that the roster architecture will need to evolve.

There is also a leadership dimension that the numbers cannot fully capture. Younger players in the Serbian programme have spoken about how much Jokic's presence elevates their training camps. He does not grandstand, but his work ethic and basketball intelligence set a standard the group aspires to meet. That culture-building function is every bit as important as his points and rebounds on the scoreboard.

The Bogdanovic Question

If Jokic is the certainty, Bogdan Bogdanovic is the most consequential uncertainty hanging over the programme. The guard has been Serbia's primary ball-handler and playmaker in the backcourt for years, bringing a composure in big moments — particularly in European competition — that few perimeter players in the country's history have matched. His three-point shooting, pick-and-roll creativity and ability to create late-clock shots have made him a genuine co-star alongside Jokic at the international level.

Bogdanovic's free-agency status means his club future for 2026-27 remains unresolved at the time of writing. Where he lands — whether in the NBA, EuroLeague or elsewhere — will have a direct bearing on his conditioning and readiness when qualifying camps convene. A move to a high-usage European environment, for instance, could actually sharpen his form heading into the national-team window. An NBA role that lacks consistent minutes, conversely, could blunt the edge Serbia needs from him. The federation will be monitoring developments closely and maintaining dialogue with his camp.

Bogdan Bogdanovic

It would be premature to plan for a Serbia without Bogdanovic, but it would equally be irresponsible not to. Pesic's staff are understood to be assessing how the offence would function if he were unavailable for stretches — a planning exercise that, as a side-effect, may accelerate the development of the players most likely to benefit from expanded responsibility.

Emerging Talent: Topic, the Next Wave

The most exciting dimension of Serbia's medium-term outlook is the talent pipeline, and at its head stands Nikola Topic. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard — who has been embedded in one of the NBA's most analytically sophisticated environments — is developing at a rate that has Serbian basketball observers projecting a future starting role in the national team. His playmaking instincts, competitive temperament and ability to handle pressure-moment decisions are precisely the qualities Serbia will need as the Jokic era eventually transitions.

Topic is not alone. The broader Serbian cohort of young professionals across European leagues represents a depth of talent that the national programme has rarely enjoyed simultaneously. Pesic's task will involve integrating these younger voices into a winning system without disrupting the cohesion that more experienced players provide. Transition years in national team cycles are notoriously delicate, and Serbia will need to navigate that balance with care as qualifiers approach.

The qualifying campaign, which is expected to begin in late autumn 2026, will serve as an early stress test. Results in those games matter for seeding and group placement, but they are equally valuable as developmental environments — identifying which younger players can handle international intensity before the tournament proper arrives in 2027.
