Serbia U19 Lose 1-0 to Portugal but Euro 2027 Qualification Path Remains Open
Football 💬 Comments

Serbia's new Under-19 generation ended the opening round of qualification for the 2027 UEFA European Under-19 Championship with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Portugal in Thessaloniki. Soares scored the only goal in the 33rd minute, giving Portugal a half-time lead that they protected until the final whistle.

The result means Serbia will continue the next stage of the new qualification format in League B in November. Portugal, Kazakhstan, and Greece remain in League A, but Serbia still has a route back to the top division before the decisive March 2027 phase.

Portugal Decide a Tight Match in the First Half

The match at the Kaftanzoglio Stadium was settled by one first-half moment. Portugal took the lead through Soares after 33 minutes and entered the break 1-0 ahead.

Serbia made several changes during the second half in an attempt to increase its attacking threat. Ilija Ilić came on after 58 minutes, while Ivković, Đurković, and Milvud were introduced in the 69th minute. Tomović entered for the closing stage of the match.

Despite the changes, Serbia could not find an equalizer. The team finished the game with ten players after Ostojić received a red card in the seventh minute of added time.

Serbia Move to League B for the November Round

The 2027 qualifying cycle is being played under a new UEFA system and began earlier than the traditional youth international calendar. Four teams competed in the opening group, with three retaining their places in League A.

  • Portugal remain in League A
  • Kazakhstan remain in League A
  • Greece remain in League A
  • Serbia move to League B for the November round

Moving to League B is a setback, but it does not end Serbia's qualification campaign. The next round gives the team an opportunity to earn a return to League A before the decisive groups are formed.

How the New Qualification Route Works

In March 2027, each new League A group will contain three teams from League A and one team promoted from League B. The winner of that group will qualify for the European Championship.

Serbia must therefore use the November fixtures to secure the strongest possible position and return to the top level. The format places immediate importance on every result because movement between the two leagues directly affects the composition of the final qualification groups.

Serbia's Next Priorities

  • Recover quickly after a difficult opening round
  • Improve efficiency in front of goal
  • Build greater continuity within the new generation
  • Compete for promotion from League B in November
  • Prepare for a possible decisive League A group in March 2027

A Valuable Test for a New Generation

The squad is at the beginning of a new cycle under head coach Slađan Nikolić. Matches against strong youth teams such as Portugal provide an early measure of the level required in international competition.

A one-goal defeat shows that Serbia remained within reach of the result, but the inability to respond after falling behind will be an important area for the coaching staff to review. The substitutions suggest an effort to change the rhythm, yet Portugal retained its advantage.

The November round will now become the central target. Serbia's players have time to gain additional minutes at club level, strengthen their relationships on the pitch, and return to international duty with a clearer understanding of the qualification system.

Serbia Still Have a Path to the European Championship

The defeat closes the first phase with Serbia in League B, but the campaign remains alive. Promotion in November would place the team back into a League A group in March, where first place would secure a place at the 2027 European Championship.

The margin for error is smaller, but the objective is still possible. The next international window will show how quickly the new Under-19 team can respond and whether it can turn the lessons from Thessaloniki into a successful second phase.
